My Ants Have 'Facehugger' Mites

20 000 Weergaven 401K

My ants have 'Facehugger' mites: The future was looking hopeful for my new young ant colony of carpenter ants, named the Woodland Warriors, which had lots of young and a healthy-looking queen ant laying eggs. However, all that changed when I spotted a huge mite on the underside of the workers' heads. I wasn't sure what to make of it, and tried to assess whether the scary-looking had a symbiotic relationship with the ants. I consulted some mite experts and learned a few things about them over this past week. Hope you enjoy this week's episode. Ant love forever! This video was shot in 4K Ultra HD resolution.

Greetings, Ant Lovers/AC Family! I can't believe 'Facehuggers' actually exist outside sci-fi movies and in the microworld of ants! Hope you guys remember to hit LIKE, SHARE, & SUBSCRIBE (hit the BELL and select ALL for Notifications Squad) if you enjoyed this video. After hearing all the info I share in this video, please do let me know what you guys think we should do. I'm very worried for our Woodland Warriors. Thank you so much, guys! I wonder if mites sometimes come in on the ants' food? Every single time a prey animal is offered to them, there has to be the possibility of cross contamination. Can ants eat pre-frozen (then briefly thawed) prey animals or do they have to be wriggling? How cold-tolerant are most mite species? That might be a way to destroy most pathogens before offering prey to the colony. Or at least slowing pathogen growth. Another idea might be flash boiling. Just a real quick dip into the water. A small prey animal would die in a second, then cool very fast. Then the animal would be mite-free - but not completely 'cooked' and still moist - before being introduced to the colony. Can ants eat cooked food? They don't seem to mind the cooked meat and dog food they find in my house! lol! I'm probably offering ideas that ant keepers have already considered and tried over the years to protect their pets, but I decided to toss them out anyway just in case the train of thought might prove helpful. I really want to watch this succeed!

My suggestion would be to look at the tubes if they get more dirty then they are maybe not eating the fungus if the tube stays clean though then maybe they are eating the fungus. But I'm not an ant exspert so yeah. Sorry for my spelling I tried my best.

Bag it, tag it, and send it out. I wouldn't take the chance if it is harmful. If it happens to be beneficial to the ants in some way, I'm sure the ants will be okay in the long run.

Face mites - Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis - spend their days facedown inside your hair follicles, nestled up against the hair shaft, where you can't see them. They eat sebum, the greasy oil your skin makes to protect itself and keep it from drying out. ... The mites live for about two weeks.

Quarantine the ant from the colony to keep the queen safe. then try killing the mite (maybe using a bunch of hypoaspis mites?). if you cannot remove the mite kill the ant as well as the mite to save the colony. they are probably more easily transmissible in crowded places.

I have a new respect for you friend. You are the expert ant man here. I am an expert in my field, which has absolutely nothing to do with ants. You have balls to trust a majority vote from people who have nothing better to do than flip a coin and smash like. Potentially this choice could have an impact on the future of the colony. Now if you asked me what id do I would say that id ask an Ant Man his opinion because id just be flipping a coin.

Dude, you WAY overthink things! Just send the mites or ants/mites in to the identified. Carpenter ants can do just fine without mites like this and the queen is going to continue to lay eggs so that one or two ants in a test tube setup is not going to make a difference. I know this comment is too late regarding this situation, but in future just calm down and don't overthink things. Thanks for you channel, you have educated a lot of people and probably encouraged others to start this hobby.
